Tips For Restoring A Classic Truck

Posted by

One question many antique truck owners ask is, "How can I restore it to its former glory?" When seeking restoration parts for classic cars and trucks, you'll need to have the best plan in place to achieve top results. At Anderson Restorations, we offer a wide range of classic vehicle parts that help meet your unique needs.

Today, we'll discuss some classic truck restoration tips that'll help make your truck good as new.

Perform Research On Your Truck

You should first perform extensive research on your truck's worth. The research information will help you properly decide between OEM parts and truck paint color.

You'll also need to research which restoration type is suitable for your truck. It's best to seek a full restoration if you fall under these scenarios.

  • Poor truck conditions
  • Desire to enter truck competitions

Otherwise, a semi restoration would be ideal.

Remove And Organize Parts

The first restoration step is to take the truck apart until you reach the frame. As for the cargo box, take it out and send it to a garage for sanding and painting. Also, remove the doors, glass, and trim from the cab. Once that's done, sandpaper the cab.

For full restorations, use a joist to remove the engine. Then detach the cowl and set it aside.

When removing parts, place each one in a labeled shelf spot. Make sure to keep all screws and small pieces together with their respective parts. This helps keep you organized throughout the project.

Fix Dents And Other Damages

Check for any dents on your truck. In some cases, you may be able to fix hood, panel, and trunk dents without a problem.

Car door and roof dents are tougher to remove as dents with creases are. For extensive damages, it's best to seek expert guidance at a restoration garage.

Restore The Truck Bed

Older trucks have rusted beds that need replacing. This is mainly done through this three-step process.

  1. Cut out the rusted areas.
  2. Treat liner panels with rust inhibitors.
  3. Weld new steel in place.

For extreme cases, it may require these actions.

  • Blasting the frame down to the bare metal
  • Welding in new cross members

Once you've finished with the bed restoration, you'll be able to prime and paint the bed.

Upgrade The Transmission

Upgrading the transmission can revitalize your truck's functions. One thing to note is that transmissions can be heavy and tricky to handle alone. That's why you should seek a restoration specialist for this task. They have experience dealing with many styles of trucks and can make your upgrade successful.

Install The Parts And Repaint Truck

Once everything else is done, you can then replace the wiring harness, brakes, lamps, and other parts you need to have installed.  Not everything will need replacements, and you may be able to use original parts in some cases.

After the parts are installed, sand your truck down to remove the paint. Once finished, apply a fresh coat of primer and paint for the final touch to your newly restored truck.

Choose Restoration Parts For Classic Cars You Can Count On

Every restoration is different and has its challenges. That's why you'll need a plan that works best for you. That way, you'll have the best chance at project success.

At Anderson Restorations, we know a thing or two about classic trucks. No matter what stage you're at, we stand ready to help fulfill your truck restoration goals.
